Abstract

The cities which are in a contact with watercourse are with this specific location unique and appealing. Urban links with the embankments open the city to the attractive promenades, used for relaxation and recreation. These public spaces of promenades comprise the potential for social impulses and meeting places. They are humanizing cities and integrating urban and natural elements. The city-making, place-making and the attractivity of the waterfront can have a diverse functional basis, thus creating a big range of the use and design of public spaces. Case studies in the localities of Slovak towns Topo??any, Tren?Гn, Hlohovec, and KomГЎrno, point to the urban planning, architectural and landscape architectural design concepts of the waterfronts showing the alternative options of using the potential of the river and involvement of residents and river visitors. The hierarchy of the riverbank usage depends on the waterfront location to the city centre and to its historical core, towards a wider centre up to the urban fringe territories. The strongest urbanity is created by the central promenades, which gradually can change their character, benefiting from natural elements and forming recreational zones of the city hinterland. They integrate the elements of water with urban structure and link the green infrastructure into the interconnected system. Interactive connection points of the city with water become a sought-after destinations and places of humanization and ecologisation of the city.
