Abstract

The study is based on the hypothesis that various extracts from Usnea barbata L. have antibacterial action. In this work, six lichen extracts of different concentrations in: 96% ethanol, acetone and water, have been studied. Their inhibitory action was tested by diffusimetric antibiogram method, on Gram-positive bacteria from the oro-dental cavity: two Streptococcus species: Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus oralis and two Staphylococcus species: Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Our results showed that in the case of acetone and ethanolic Usnea barbata L. extracts, inhibitory activity on all Gram-positive bacteria is significant. The ethanolic extracts are more active than acetone ones, on all Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species. Staphylococcus epidermidis is more sensitive than Staphylococcus aureus, to both types of extracts. On these Gram-positive bacteria, aqueous Usnea barbata L. extract has different effects. On Staphylococcus epidermidis, in the zone of inhibition of the aqueous extract, development of resistant mutant strains was observed. On Staphylococcus aureus, aqueous extract is totally inactive. The aqueous extract doesnВ’t have antibacterial action for any of the tested Streptococcus species. This study showed that acetone and ethanolic extracts from Usnea barbata L. have an important inhibitory activity on Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, in oro-dental infections where strains of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus are involved, Usneae lichen acetone or ethanolic extracts could be very effective.
