EFFICIENCY OF PHYSICAL EXERCISES PROGRAMME IN SPRAIN ANKLE TREATMENT
Abstract
Background Sprain ankle is a common musculoskeletal injury, characterized by partially or completely tear of its ligaments, due to sudden stretching, which commonly occurs when the ankle is suddenly twisted, during sportive activities (running, jumping), at athletes or by stepping off an uneven surface, at sedentary people. Purpose of this study, was to show the efficiency of physical exercises programme in sprain ankle treatment, by studying the speciality literature. Methods The 22 subjects, represented by sedentary people, homogeneous regarding height and weight, with an average age of 32 years old, males and females, with chronic ankle sprain, frequently associated with chronic ankle joint instability, first time diagnosed through medical and radiological exam, about 10 months ago, with lateral ankle sprain, grade 1 and 2, were divided in two groups, first group of 11 patients, which benefited of rehabilitation physical exercises programme, for 8 weeks and second group, formed by the others 11 patients, which followed the programme, for a period of two weeks. The rehabilitation programme consisted in several physical exercises, that used isometric, isotonic contractions and proprioceptive activities, as ankle plantar and dorsal flexion using an elastic cord, resisted ankle inversion and eversion, forward lunge, heel raise, step up, balance and reach exercises with a chair, side lying leg lift, towel stretch, standing calf and soleus stretch, jump rope, wobble board exercises, balance disc, performed 3 times a week, approximately 45 minutes per session, 10 minutes pause between sets, 1-3 sets of each type of exercise, daily. Results By using the articular and muscular testing, were evaluated and measured the joint mobility and muscle strength, before and after the rehabilitation programme and the obtained results, were compared between them, for each group and with the ones of the other group, with the help of Student test. Were remarked significant improvement at first group, for both studied parameters, in comparison with the second group, where the differences were not significant. As well, was observed an increase of ankle joint stability during movements, demonstrated by the correctness of performed exercises execution technique. Conclusions The physical exercise program proved to be an effective method to increase ankle mobility and stability, also, foot and shank muscles force, thus, preventing short and longterm complications.
