ELEMENTS OF THE SACRED IN CROATIAN LITERARY-ARTISTIC FUTURISM IN THE CONTEXT OF ITALIANISTIC TENDENCIES
Abstract
This paper aims at illustrating and analyzing the elements of the sacred in the symbolic structure of early twentienth-century Croatian Futurist literary texts and works of art, as well as semantic and stylistic range thereby implied within such corpora. Methodological attention is drawn to their significant reception and socio-cultural resonance, including interconnections with other aspects of artistic expression (in the interdisciplinary fields of visuality), and concomitantly with analogous manifestations in Italy, where Futurism originated. Comparative characterization of critical and philosophical nature puts particular accent on works created or published in Italian cultural environment. The permanent influence of Italian Futurism is underscored, with the scope of determining multifaceted textual and artistic intersections with its Slavic counterpart, regarding various tendencies towards thematization of spiritualized discourse. The spirituality is an intrinsic theme in the works of Gian Paolo, whose literary opus becomes the initiator and epitome of Futurist tendencies, also preannuncing other Slavic avanguardistic movements, and allowing to take a global perspective in a comparative sense, due to ever-increasing readings of his translated writings in Italian, English and German. Examples of conveying spiritual meaning through literary topoi include his book of verse, later translated as La bestemmia, or the text entitled Accenni, published in В«LacerbaВ», edited by Giovanni Papini and Ardengo Soffici. Further examples of aforeintroduced emblematic parallelisms are also being furnished, such as those presented in the program of literary review В«WhirligigВ» and its multidirectional relations to Italian Futurist manifestos. Likewise, the analogies are established with oeuvres of other literary and artistic personalities operating in these contexts (Matos, Matosic, Donadini etc). In the present paper the elaboration concerns the modalities with which the spiritual component remains interwoven with literary writings, as well as with other forms of artworks within Slavic literary-artistic Futurism, by establishing correspondences with Italian culture.
