NEW TRENDS AND EFFECTIVENESS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS OF THE UNIVERISTY OF SOUTH BOHEMIA IN CESKE BUDEJOVICE
Abstract
The Faculty of Economics of the University of South Bohemia in česke Budějovice launched its own model of providing foreign language education two years ago. This model consists of three steps: entrance exams, which identify students with a lack of knowledge of languages needed for studying at the faculty, compulsory lessons with a final test, and optional courses focused on professional language (which means mostly economics and business). Teaching in compulsory and optional courses matches the international standards given by the CEFR of the EU. The benefit of that is a document certifying the level of language knowledge achieved. This model enables seven teachers of the Department of Languages to teach about 1,000 students every semester. It was made possible also due to the usage of computer programmes for testing. For the English language final test, a „Placement test“ provided by Oxford University Press is used. All the other tests were transferred into the Moodle programme which is used by the whole faculty. This computerized system of testing enables the students to see their results immediately after finishing the test and it helps to avoid complaints about marks. It also reflects new trends in assessment of the knowledge of foreign languages in most of the western countries in Europe. This paper presents research made on efficiency of the new approach to the language education.
