COMPLEMENTARITY OF BOTH GIS AND FRACTAL METHODOLOGY IN DETERMINING THE ECONOMIC PRESSURE ON FOREST AREAS IN THE APUSENI MOUNTAINS, ROMANIA
Abstract
Deforestation is a contemporary challenge manifested in extensive areas, requiring both quantitative analysis through established and qualitative methods by applying fractal analysis methods. Using GIS methods for processing post-processed satellite imagery, the loss area during 2000-2016 were determined and prepared as images necessary for fractal analysis. The fractal methods used were the Local Connected Fractal Dimension (LCFD), the Tug-of War Lacunarity and the Fractal Fragmentation Index (FFI). Methods that have been applied to determine the connectivity, fragmentation, and heterogeneity of deforested surfaces. Applying the three fractal methods we have found that forest frag-mentation obtained through FFI has increased due to the reduction of the forest area, by LCFD we have shown the increase of connectivity with the larger size of the deforested areas and the heterogeneity imposed by them. Qualitative information obtained through fractal analysis is able to analyse the irregularities of connectivity, fragmentation, but also the spatial heterogeneity of forests, indicating how deforestation breaks down the forest surface.
