Abstract

Arad County is located in the western part of Romania, within the DKMT cross-border area. The National Archaeological Record of Romania lists 246 historic sites in this area, most of which are found in villages. Only few of these monuments are valorized as landmarks. Rural monuments are not advertised and have no proper monument protection. Local communities do not have the means, the awareness or the genuine interest to preserve them. Thus, initiatives for rehabilitation, reuse and valorization of some of these monuments are to come from outside the rural community. On the other hand, the few musicalized historic sites in villages are either isolated by fences or located in inaccessible locations. This does not encourage a first-hand contact between the preserved monument and the visitor or the villagers. The present study aims to analyze the monument valorisation system in Arad County, in an attempt for improvement. The expected result is a feasible, socially aware and economically efficient plan for monument protection, activation and integration.
