HISTORY AND TRADITION - MAIN IDEAS BEHIND OSKAR GOTTLIEB BLARRВ’S MUSIC

Abstract

The article focuses on the compositional activity of Oskar Gottlieb Blarr. This contemporary German artist creates diverse music based on a variety of themes, forms and styles, and carrying a humanistic and religious message. His works arise from the past, document historical memory and pay tribute to traditions. As a musical testimony of the past, they commemorate events, facts and figures, but they also express a reflective longing for lost homeland. History and traditions present in Blarr’s music are discussed through the prism of reminiscences related to the country of his childhood, Lutheran traditions, references to great composers, old styles and composition techniques. The article brings up his works devoted to the memory of great historical figures, inspired by Jewish culture and thematically related to the martyrdom of Poles and Jews during World War II. It offers an overview of the composer’s pieces which while referring to the broadly understood “past”, are very much embedded in the dimension and ideological and musical context of the present times. Such approach allows to appreciate his music not only for its artistic values, but also for the “highest values” that it represents, and which should constitute a permanent element of today’s reality.
