AUGMENTED CREATIVITY OR DIMINISHED SHAPE COMPLEXITY? THE USE OF THE COMPUTER BY STUDENTS IN FURNITURE DESIGN
Abstract
As digital fabrication is becoming widely available, to design using CAD modeling methods seems to be the only viable solution. Similar prejudices among students are being observed, in relation to analog methods of formal exploration, which are perceived as being anachronic. The present study is based on a comparative analysis of projects that have been carried out by the 3rd year students of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of Timisoara during the interior design classes of the second semester. The study focuses on the differences in shape complexity between furniture items designed using CAD design compared to those generated by analogue techniques. It's about perceived formal complexity, not about its definition in terms of geometric complexity or density of elements. The results of the analysis indicate a higher complexity of analogical elaborated projects and several possible causes are identified. Interesting phenomena is observed also in the case of projects realized using hybrid techniques. Observations have applicability on how to further improve the interior design workshop in order to increase studentВ’s awareness of the importance of a design to a higher level of formal complexity and in an attempt to mediate the differences in understanding technology and its coresponding image between tutors and students, the latter belonging to the digital native generation.
