THE TEXT OF THE QURAN AS A UNIQUE SOURCE OF LINGUISTIC INFORMATION

Abstract

The medieval Moslem scholars among the special features of the of the Qur??n first and foremost mentioned its inimitability and uniqueness as the final revelation of God. As for the modern researches they also consider it as a unique source of information related both to the history and culture of ancient Arabia and linguistic situation on the peninsula as well. Its uniqueness not only in its origin but also because this text is a unique example of the language spoken in Arabia at that time. The text of the Qur??n is one of the first original documents written in 'pure Arabic', that tells us much about the linguistic situation on the territory of the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th C. AD and reflects not only the features of the dialect of the Quraysh tribe but also the peculiarities of other tribal dialects and languages of Pre-Islamic Arabia. Besides that, the Holy Text provides us with the information about extra-linguistic factors that had left their traces on the entire linguistic situation at that time. When talking aboutthe morphology of the Qur??n, one can find out that there is a lot of archaic modelswhichcorrespond to morphologic forms in other Semitic languages. No less important is the analysis of the graphic representation of this unique text that reveals the sequence of stages of the formation of the Arabic written tradition in diachrony. The vocabulary of the Qur??n is very rich and diverse and includes both special religious terminology and specific vocabulary related to the economy, legal sphere, social aspects, customs and traditions of Arabia in the Early Middle Ages.
