COMBINATION OF VARIOUS FORMS OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES AT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
It would be appropriate to use various forms of activity for students in order to effectively educate at the lessons of foreign languages at higher education institutions. They include the combination of collective, group, frontal and individual forms of work. Collective or team work stimulates students’ cognitive activity, promotes development of their creative abilities, makes discipline, forms application to work, partnership and other moral qualities. It is better to couple the collective form of work with the individual one so that the latter resulted from the former one and came to the collective work again. It can be carried out by means of the variable independent, self-study work. Group work allows to arrange students’ individual activity, facilitates to form interests and an ability to self education, strengthens students’ motivation, raises an aspiration to more advanced achievements, helps to improve psychological climate, personal attitudes in the group, enhancement of students’ and a teacher cooperation, students’ cooperation in the group. This form is used to solve almost all didactic (learning) problems: solution of tasks and exercises, consolidation, review and learning of new a new material. Frontal work, which is also known as “teacher-centered teaching”, is essential to attract and concentrate students’ attention on the learning material. The proficiency of this form of classes depends on the quality of the material having been presented and explained by a teacher and the quality of perception by students. In the course of this activity a teacher focuses main efforts on providing cooperation of all the students in achieving goals. An individual form of work supports students to reveal their self-sufficiency and independence in every respect: thinking, studying, obtaining knowledge, training, showing their wills, wishes, motivations to make the tasks set and learning efficiency. Although studying usually takes place in a team mastering new skills and gaining knowledge are always considered to be personal processes. When the organizational form of individual work is educationally correct and expeditious it is of great importance to form needs to self-education and appropriate skills.
