USING CONTROLLABLE RANDOMNESS AND ATOMIC DESIGN APPROACH TO DESIGN POSTERS WITH TYPOGRAPHIC MEANS

Abstract

Atomic design is a methodology for crafting effective design systems that usually applied to websiteВ’s design and development. It provides a structured approach that gives a flexibility to the design system but retains its recognizability. Controllable randomness is an approach that bounds randomness (randomly generated values) by the set of rules developed by the designer. It also gives flexibility and retains recognizability as the atomic design approach does but makes it in a different way. This paper discusses a combination of these two approaches to design posters with typographic means and provides several examples of blending these approaches on different stages of poster design. The results of the experiments with blending the approaches provide a field to determine boundaries of each approach and to discuss applicability of such blending. The paper also points out the technologies that can give advantages in using controllable randomness such as variable fonts, the technology that was introduced with version 1.8 of OpenType font format specification.
