Abstract

Considering that the adoption and usage of a functionally integrated information system represent significant aspects for increasing the performance of a hospital, this paper presents a series of relevant issues concerning this topic. The first section of the article outlines important particularities related to integrated information systems for hospitals such as the components of these systems, their basic functionalities and the advantages of using these systems in hospitals. The second part of the paper presents the results of qualitative research that aimed at identifying the management staff's opinions regarding the processes of acquisition and implementation of integrated information systems for hospitals. The study followed several main objectives and tried to identify: the selection criteria and the selection methods taken into consideration when an integrated information system for hospitals is adopted, the elements involved in the quality evaluation of the information systems, the main problems encountered during the implementation process and the importance that is given to the usage of information systems in hospitals. The conversation guide used for data collection was organized around three main discussion themes and included a total number of 21 questions. The research was conducted among specialists with leading positions in hospitals and medical clinics in Romania. All the results obtained led to the identification of a "selection – decision – acquisition" mechanism currently used by the hospital`s management staff in Romania that could be useful for companies developing and or offering integrated information systems for this particular dynamic market segment.
