GENERATION Z: PRIORITIES OF COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS

Abstract

The third decade of this century will see transformations resulting from several technological, climatic, and social changes. The labour market will be entered by people born at the turn of the millennium. Being known as Generation Z, they are rather specific in many respects. With opportunities to study abroad, their language skills are at a very good level and they have no problems employing the new advanced technologies. The life values and priorities of this generation will help form the future in each country. In the Czech Republic, an enquiry has been made into the life values and priorities of Generation Z. In the study, university students assessed their current positions in the labour market including their knowledge, capacities, and skills, listing their strengths and weaknesses as well as their ultimate goals. They also described the way in which they want to achieve their goals and their inner motivation. The enquiry research took place from January to May 2019. Open questions were put to 126 young respondents aged 19 to 21. After being statistically processed, the answers bring a current view of the values and preferences of the young generation, which, depending on their education, may have a major say in the future prosperity and heading of the Czech Republic. Against the cultural and historical background, the paper will see their answers in a wide context.
