LARGE BUSINESS LOCALIZATION AS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FACTOR OF COASTAL TERRITORIES

Abstract

Coastal territories are the national growth nodes throughout the world. Concentration of human activity along the coast have long been recognized and conceptualized within the notion of coastalization. Russia is often perceived to be exposed to the opposite effect – continentalization. Article analyzes the antecedents of large business localization in 14 coastal regions of the European part of Russia. Results verify the assumption of companies being attracted to marine coasts of Russia, proving the general coastalization trend of economic activity, infrastructure and population. The interest of large enterprises to localize in the coastal zones is associated with the concentration of large oil and gas deposits (offshore and onshore), logistics opportunities and recreational capacity of the coast (mainly at the Black Sea coast). Coastal occupation becomes one of the significant factors of overall economic activity. Being centered on major sea ports (in Novorossiysk, Ust-Luga, Saint-Petersburg, Murmansk, etc.) clustering of business activity acquires cross-aquatic characteristics. This increases the contact function of the coastal zone, strengthening its role of socio-economic and innovation network hub.
