MODELS FOR ARCHITECTURE OF CONTEMPORARY LOW DENSITY MIXED-USE BUILDINGS

Abstract

Mixed use is a term used for implementation of different functions (uses) in the same building. Mixed used buildings are very often related to a high density (compact)urban landscape: city centers, urban centers, particular densities and uses. The term low density refers to housing and describes partially urbanized land with dispersed (non-compact) housing(very often single family houses or semidetached housing). In times of constant urbanization, low density mixed-use houses occur more and more often. It is common for a single family house to hold a small shop or workshop. For ages, some professions did not require commuting. Today, commuting is more common but some professions do not require commuting or have various requirements. Contemporary architectural solutions are much more flexible and affordable today than ever before. Separating space for a small office in a house can be done easily: e.g. many IT specialists choose home office work. Also, many freelancers with art-oriented jobs (architects, photographers) prefer to work close to their home (at home) because of non-standard working hours. The article presents 3 case studies of different types of households with different added uses. Their urban meaning depends on the architectural layout. All the case studies are located in different locations. The authors conclude that contemporary urbanization can be more sustainable by increasing housing density and mixing use.
