WORKERSВ’ COLONIES IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF WROCLAW (FORMER BRESLAU) IN THE LATE 19TH AND BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Abstract
The article presents examples of workers’ colonies, both realized as well as in the design phase, in what today is the area of Wroc?aw and its surroundings, though at the time of their establishment most were located in the neighbouring communes. These are housing estates constructed near the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, i.e.: next to Schoeller’s spinning mill in Stab?owice, which became a part of the city in 1928, next to the sugar refinery in Klecina, and the railway workers’ estate “Wielka Kolonia” (Great Colony) in Brochów – incorporated into the city in 1951, as well as the never constructed project for the municipal gasworks workers’ colony in Tarnogaj, from 1904, involving the urban area of the city. Siechnice is an exception as it was never a part of Wroc?aw. Nevertheless, it was regarded that the very interesting housing estate for workers of the “Czechnica” power plant constructed in 1912-1926 should be presented among the group of Wroc?aw workers’ colonies, not only because it is in the proximity of the city (11 km) but also due to the fact that the investor and architects were from Wroc?aw.
