THE TERMINOLOGY OF THE RESTORATION IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. “RESTORATION” AND “RENEWAL” IN LUIGI VANVITELLI'S WORK.
Abstract
The modern concept of restoration as a result of a long historical process was shaped in the eighteenth century, when the evolving modern conservation principles found their first concrete expressions. Regarding this, investigating the relationship between the definition of the restoration gave by the lexicography, by the architects and by the antiquaries, and comparing it with the results of the concrete work constitutes a solid base to know in depth the process that led to the concept of restoration in its modern meaning.
