FISHING CHONDROSTOMA NASUS IN TIMIS RIVER (LUGOJ) - CULTURAL TRADITION AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ASPECTS VERSUS ENVIRONMENTAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES
Abstract
Fishing is one of the oldest occupations and together with hunting it has had a significant economic and social importance during history. Nowadays fishing can be associated with biodiversity conservation, recreation and also with environmental and cultural psychology of the local population. Chondrostoma nasus (nase), a widespread reophilic fish species from the family Cyprinidae is considered at the criteria Least Concerned (LC) by the IUCN Red List being locally threatened in many areas of Europe by loss of suitable ecosystems. There is not much data in literature about fishing of nase as a part of local cultural tradition in South-Western Romania (Lugoj area). Direct observations in the field and qualitative research based on profound interviews were performed on the people who fish in the area. The interpretation of the results led to proposals for new legislative measures at the local level in order to help the preservation of the cultural traditions and also to address the environmental challenges and ethical issues related to the fishing nase in Timis River in the context of the present-day local socio-economic developments.
