DEVELOPMENT OF CENTRE OF LATVIAN FISHERIES SECTOR CLUSTER

Abstract

In the modern economy competitiveness is set as one of conditions of economic recovery. Facilitation of competitiveness may be advanced by the means of clusters, which are set as one of key priorities in strengthening and developing innovations in the whole Europe. Facilitation of competitiveness of fisheries sector cluster is a topical issue at the level of the EU. Strengthening the competitiveness of the sector cluster may better advance not only achievement of the EU Common Fisheries Policy goals and ensuring proper management of sector's policy, but also may facilitate development of state's economy in general, especially growth of territories significant for fisheries. The research goal is to provide a general insight in the development of centre of Latvian fisheries sector cluster. On the basis of the methodology, offered by the author, and taking into account the availability and quality of data, the author described and analyzed the centre of Latvian fisheries sector cluster and its competitiveness. The results of the research show, that despite the globalization processes happening in the world and various political obstacles the centre of Latvian fisheries sector cluster is still competitive. Using the support opportunities provided by the EU financial instruments and participating in the establishment of the Common Fisheries Policy of the EU, wide opportunities reveal to the Latvian fisheries sector cluster for facilitation of its competitiveness and growth. A well thought-out and developed strategy and appropriate investment policy may facilitate the development of sector cluster.
