IMPROVEMENT IN MULTINATIONAL MILITARY MEDICAL MODULAR APPROACH
Abstract
Increased complexity of the modern battlefield extends requirements for medical support and sustainment that often exceed the capabilities of a single nation. What are the possibilities of increasing efficiency and reducing the costs of providing healthcare to deployed troops, especially in an international environment? This article, which is focused on the experimental work of the Multinational Medical Modular Approach (MMMA), tried to answer this question. One of the methodological approaches used, was a discovery experiment. In this article, we focused primarily on the discovery LIVE experiment that was conducted during the multinational military medical exercise - Vigorous Warrior 2019. The experiment, which engaged surgical modules of ROLE 2 Basic and ROLE 3 Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs), provided us with many interesting observations. The most important one was that integration of surgical module personnel into an unknown MTF worked well. However, there were still some minor limitations, especially related to communication, knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), usage of equipment, medicines, and common clinical procedures. Furthermore, there were noticeable differences between the replacement of a complete surgical team and the exchange of a half of the staff between two different nationsВ‘ surgical teams. Due to the certain aspects, such as differing standards in education, qualification, competencies, equipment and module processes, the interoperability of different providers across multinational MTFs is hindered. There is still a significant room for improvement in employing medical modules in multinational MTFs and the efficacy of existing modules? composition and configuration. For these reasons, the implementation of Multinational Medical Modular Approach (MMMA) projects can play an important role in increasing the effectiveness of deploying multinational medical units in an international environment.
