EXPLORING THE CONSEQUENCES OF JOB INSECURITY ON EMPLOYEES IN RUSSIA
Abstract
For over two decades we work under increasingly changing conditions. These changes are mostly the result of globalization, deregulation of labor markets and increasing competition. Among these changes we should name above all the growth of insecure employment. In the context of downsizing and more temporary or short term contract work, many employees may consider their jobs insecure. According to results of many investigations job insecurity influences negatively attitudes towards the job and the organization, as well as has strong associations with health outcomes including depression. The conditions of job insecurity are becoming more and more common for Russia. Our study was conducted on a sample of 104 persons working in different organizations of large industrial city in Central Russia. We examined the extent to which job insecurity alters the attitude to work and to organization employees work at, and how these changes are associated with mental health and time perspective outcomes. Data were collected through questionnaires. On the basis of subjective parameters of insecure job, the sample was split into two subsamples: (a) the respondents perceiving their job as unsecure (44 employees); (b) the respondents perceiving their job as relatively secure (60 employees). Next, in the selected groups were compared indicators characterizing the attitude to work: commitment to the organization and work, indicators of engagement (vigor, dedication, absorption), turnover intention, level of depression, and features of time perspective. As a result we found statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of commitment to work, engagement, turnover intention, depression and time perspective. Therefore we conclude: subjective feeling insecure job leads to a decline of engagement and commitment to work, higher levels of depression and turnover intention, distortion of time perspective.
