USE OF TEXTURAL FRACTAL ANALYSIS METHODS IN QUANTIFICATION OF ECONOMIC PRESSURE ON FORESTRY

Abstract

The economic pressure on the forestry fund is one of the greatest challenges of contemporary society, generating major imbalances both in the natural components of the territorial systems and in the anthropic ones. In order to quantify the evolution of the complexity of the phenomenon analysed, we have chosen for our research two methods of textural fractal analysis to determine which of the two is more relevant to the study. Textural fractal analysis is an analysis that no longer requires binarization, maintaining a high level of consistency between both quantitative and qualitative results based on grayscale images. The applied fractal methods were Higuchi 1D (H1D), considered a relatively fast algorithm for calculating the fractal dimension of one-dimensional images, namely Higuchi 2D (H2D) which unlike H1D is based on calculating the fractal complexity of an image, being a generalisation of the 1D method for calculating the fractal dimension of a planar curve. Both applied algorithms have shown that while the forest area decreases, its spatial complexity increases. Thus, quantifying the evolution of spatial complexity can provide valuable information about the spatial effects of deforestation that may reflect in the economic and legislative changes of the analysed period. Applying the H1D method to the deforested areas resulted that as the grubbed surfaces are larger, the H1D plot values are lower. It was possible to highlight the local effects of the spatial manifestation of deforestations by applying the H2D method. Thus, we have shown that the two H1D and H2D fractal methods are useful tools that can be used to quantify the fractal complexity of deforestation as well as their spatial impact on forests.
