INTRA-PARTY DEMOCRACY BASED ON CITIZENS PERCEPTION
Abstract
When it comes to the political parties in the Republic of Macedonia, there is a general perception that they have a lacking of internal democracy. One might argue that too much authority is provided to the leader of the party as well as to the limited oligarchy of people surrounding him. Although in certain cases this perception is not in accordance with official party documents, the very fact that party leaderships rarely change in the Republic of Macedonia might be used as an additional argument by those who believe that there is a sufficient lack of intra party democracy in the Republic of Macedonia. The main rationale behind the paper, is not to simply analyze intra party democracy from a purely theoretical and literature review point of view, but to rather address this issue as being considered by citizens and voters in the Republic of Macedonia. A rather large data sample is used in order to determine the general perception that ordinary citizens in the Republic of Macedonia on intra party democracy. As will be noted in the paper, the research proves the general perception of a lack of intra party democracy in the Republic of Macedonia, but surprisingly enough a large portion of respondents do not consider intra party democracy as a crucial factor of achieving electoral success but do not fail in recognizing the importance of intra party democracy in building general democratic capacities in the Republic of Macedonia.
