ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL WELL-BEING IN LARGE CITIES: CASE OF VOLGA FEDERAL DISTRICT IN RUSSIA
Abstract
In this paper authors present the assessment of ecological well-being in large Russian cities, situated in the Volga Federal District. Comparative analysis is made for five cities of the Volga Federal District of the Russian Federation for the period 2008-2015, based on data published annually by the Federal Service for State Statistics of the Russian Federation, namely the statistical yearbooks “Regions of Russia. Main socio-economic indicators of cities”. To assess the ecological well-being of inhabitants, statistical data is standardized by introducing normalized indices. The procedure of normalization is reduced to two formulas in different cases: direct (positive) and backward (negative) exponents. Further, the integral index of the ecological well-being of the population is calculated according to normalized ecological indicators. Results show that the worst situation is in city Kazan and city Ufa. Perhaps it is due to the large number of industry in these cities. Both cities are the outsiders in ecological well-being among the cities with population more than one million inhabitants in the Volga Federal District. The best ecological indicators were in city Perm for the 2008-2015 years. City Samara and city Nizhny Novgorod occupy the middle positions for both ecological indicators.
