THE NATIONALIST POPULISM AND RIGHT-WING EXTREMISM AS A THREAT OF ESTABLISHED DEMOCRACY IN SLOVAKIA
Abstract
Interest of the contribution is nationalist populism in terms of local government of Slovak Republic. The concept is closely related or is identical to the national populism, nationalism, in many cases to extremism. The nationalist populism in the Slovak Republic is studied at two levels. It occurs not only at national level but also at the local level. Profiling actors at the national level establish their ideological orientation also in regional level, and vice versa. Pluralism of interests, which is typical for the postmodern challenge, gives rise to the elevator or respectively official political parties, which are designed to attract the most votes for their leader, upholds controversial political goals. These political parties are temporary in nature, but can cause destabilization of the party system and cause an unresponsive political system as such. Mentioned threats of democracy in the Slovak Republic were showed particularly at regional level - in elections to the local government of Banska Bystrica region (2013), whose winner was the far-right party with a program and ideology bordering on extremism. Goal of the article is to discuss the causes of the success of the national populism and extremism in the form of far-right political party - the People's Party Our Slovakia - in the local government of Slovakia. Processing allowance is based on historical method and theoretical analysis of the implications of development national populism and extremism in Slovakia as well as to analyze their ideological bases and theories of democracy and populism of J. Lukacs. Behavioral method is by examining the reason for the success of the extreme right, based on the relevant data of the Statistical Office (SR) of local elections results in 2013. The outcome of investigations is based on specific causes of electoral behavior of voters in Banska Bystrica region, which was reflected to the victory of far-right political party. Reasons for this choice were (for example): dissatisfaction from the social condition of the population, unemployment, the "one party system" in national parliament or society depression because of favoring the ethnic groups and national minorities. Destabilization of the democratic system is an actual threat in the political system of Slovakia. Local success of the national-populist and extremist political party under the specific causes is the evidence of democracy crisis. Knowledge of these reasons is important to protect the democratic system from undesirable influences.
