THE LITTLE PRINCE BY EXUPERY IN LITERARY CONTEXT IN SLOVAKIA
Abstract
The Little Prince, a symbolic fairy tale by A. de Saint Exupery, is one of the pillars of modern European literature; since the first edition (1943) this literary work has been translated into over 200 languages, it has been processed in adaptations for film musicals, operas, animated series, and it still inspires dancers, musicians and writers. At the beginning of the study we briefly outline the reception of the Little Prince and selected creative updates of this story in Slovakia. The core of the study consists of a comparative analysis and interpretation of the story The Little Prince by A. Exupery and the story The Little Princess by the contemporary Slovak author Jan Uliciansky. The relationship between the two literary works we see as a relationship between pre-text and post text. Comparative analysis of both texts follows the presence of direct and indirect intertextual links, citations, allusions and paraphrases of The Little Prince by Exupery in the fairy tale The Little Princess by Uliciansky and the function of these procedures for its aesthetic effect. Uliciansky selects and elaborates such motives of ExuperyВ’s fairy tale, which are key for the meaning of the message and at the same time they uncover the problems that are present in todayВ’s civilized world. We conclude that intertextuality in J. UlicianskyВ’s concept has a symptom of magic, playfulness and in some places also cryptogram. That testifies about the same feelings of loneliness of contemporary man and about the value of childhood, as it is shown in A. ExuperyВ’s fairy tale.
