ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERSВ’ PROFESSIONAL DIGITAL COMPETENCE: A FOCUS ON TEACHER EDUCATION
Abstract
The expectations of teachers and their professional activities are currently changing, and new professional standards are being implemented, including EC Supporting Teacher Competence Development, UK TeachersВ’ Standards, Transforming American Education, and Russian Teacher Professional Standard. An analysis of these standards reveals wide variations in their functions and application, but all of them define teachersВ’ competences in terms that are both country-specific and universal. One of these universal metrics is professional digital competence defined as knowledge and an effective use of digital technologies in the classroom. Given the gap between current methodologies and the standard requirements, development of competence in this area has become a challenge in teacher training. The paucity of curricula and courses aimed at developing professional digital competence in ELT has motivated this research, and this paper is intended to serve two main purposes, namely to clarify the concept of professional digital competence and to illustrate the content of a course designed at Herzen University specifically to develop it. Professional digital competence consists of generic, didactic, and professional oriented digital competences. The concept of didactic digital competence captures the digital needs specific to each subject, as it does in ELT, so it is of particular interest. The special course trains students to use technology in ELT in various ways, including the creation of graphic representations of information using Piktochart and VideoScribe. Our results indicate that the quality of teacher training will be enhanced by this course and our methods will enable future teachers of English to meet the standard requirements.
