Abstract

The study deals with the topic of otherness in literary work for children and youth in Slovakia. The gradual incorporation of otherness into the literature for children and youth is one of the possible ways to strengthen the inclusion of people with disabilities in society. The literature for children and youth on the topic of human otherness shows the way, in which it is possible to acquaint children with this important issue, and accordingly prevent the social exclusion of handicapped individuals. By offering a suitable literary work, we can help the child reader to understand the meaning of things and phenomena related to otherness while clarifying his own role in this world and in life. A quality literary work helps the reader cope with the problems he faces and understand the world in which he lives. Last but not least, it presents to him the characters, who help him to better understand himself. With the help of artistic literature, we can show the child reader that the world is not uniform, but that all the people living in this world are interesting and diverse. In the last two decades, original and translated literary works on this issue have been added to the Slovak book market. In this paper, we focus our analytical-interpretive attention on the form of artistic representation of otherness in the pictorial-text narrative of Daniel Rusar Strakac a Tioni (Spotted and Those-they). It is a pictorial-text narrative thematising the skin disease vitiligo. The otherness of the protagonist leads to his exclusion from society and the story is a picture of the protagonistВ’s process of coping with this situation and finding a way to re-establish social contacts on a new qualitative basis. The humorous point conveys the message that difference is a natural part of the world, with which society can identify if a disadvantaged individual identifies with it first.
