ADVANCES IN DENTAL MATERIALS THROUGH NANOTECHNOLOGY. A REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Management of the health of oral tissues is a main prerequisite in dentistry. Nanotechnology, an emerging interdisciplinary field with rapid development, has become one of the most favoured technologies in dental applications. This review aims at defining the role and potential of bio-nanomaterials in dental medicine. It describes the basic concept of nanomaterials, latest innovations in nanomaterials and their applications in dentistry. Materials & methods: To validate these issues, current literature on the latest improvements in nanomaterials and nanotechnology applied to various disciplines of dentistry, patent literature and related marketed products were critically reviewed; focusing on the use of nanomaterials for improving the quality of oral care. An electronic scientific database research that included PubMed, Cochrane and Medline was conducted. The following keywords were used: nanotechnology; dentistry; oral health care. Case reports, clinical trials, editorials and opinion letters were excluded of my research. Results: It can be seen that nanotechnology has been used in dentistry, particularly in the development of restorative materials. A range of synthetic nanoparticles such as hydroxyapatite, bioglass, zirconia, restorative cements and silver nanoparticles are proposed for dental restoration. To date, the most considerable contribution of nanotechnology to dentistry is the more augmented restoration of tooth structure with nanocomposites. Other areas offer significant promise, particularly in the prevention and treatment of oral biofilms. Conclusions: The substantial contribution of nano-dental materials is the identification of oral health related problems by better diagnosis and management of dental disorders by bio-nanomaterials, therefore improving the oral health care of patients and their quality of life.
