EDUCATIONAL MAP AS A TOOL FOR PROVIDING INFORMATION AFTER THE IMPLANTATION OF A VASCULAR PROSTHESIS

Abstract

{{Background: }} The aim of the study was to find out the way of providing information preferred by patients after implantation of vascular prosthesis in lower extremities or abdominal aorta in order to develop a new educational material. {{Methods: }} The participants involved in the study had achieved at least 24 points of Mini Mental State Examination and had undertaken the surgery. The study was agreed by the institutions`s ethical committee and all the participants who had been informed about the study purpose prior to the dialogues. 15 structured dialogues were performed on the day before the discharge. The data analyses by open coding were performed by 3 independently working researchers. {{Results:}} 10 men and 5 women participated in the study. The participants` average age was 65.5 years (standard deviation being 8.733). The youngest participant and oldest participant were 51 and 79 years old, respectively. 7 patients answered that they had been informed orally, 2 patients said that verbal instructions had been complemented by visual instructions, 4 patients received both verbal and written instructions, 2 patients did not answer the question. 4 patients stated that they had preferred oral instructions while one of them regarded oral information as sufficient and refused written instructions. 9 patients preferred both oral and written information, two of them would, in addition, appreciate information from internet. 2 patients did not answer this question. {{Conclusion: }} The study has shown the necessity of patient education in both oral and written forms, taking into account individual patient needs. Based on the results, an educational map for patient hospitalization has been developed.
