TOURISM SUPRASTRUCTURE IN THE REGIONS OF LATVIA

Abstract

In Latvia, tourism is considered to be one of the opportunities for economic growth and one of the priorities for the services sector, as it is a significant source of export revenue that contributes to the country’s GDP. An essential role in tourism development is played by tourism suprastructure, i.e. accommodation establishments and enterprises providing catering services. The research aim is to examine the tourism suprastructure in the regions of Latvia. The research aim has two subordinate tasks: (1) to examine changes in the indicators of tourism suprastructure in the regions of Latvia; (2) to perform a cluster analysis of tourism suprastructure by municipality in Latvia. The research employed the following methods: monographic, a multifactor statistical analysis method – clustering –, economic statistical methods, synthesis and analysis. The research results revealed that the distribution of tourism suprastructure across the statistical regions of Latvia was uneven and no considerable changes in the regional distribution were observed in the period of analysis. The cluster analysis confirmed that the tourism suprastructure was more competitive in the cities of Latvia: Riga (Cluster 1), Jurmala (Cluster 2), Ventspils (Cluster 3), Liepaja and Daugavpils (Cluster 4), as well as in municipalities important for tourism exports – Engure and Sigulda (Cluster 4), where investments were made in tourism and popular tourist places were concentrated.
