EXPERIENCE OF (UN)SEEING IN THE PICTURE BOOKS

Abstract

Study deals with the thematisation of visual deprivation (blindness) in the picture books, which are (in connection with its designation both as for intact as well as for handicapped reader) labeled with attributes “accessible” and “inclusive”. As illustrated in creative practice, such books are characteristic by an emphasis on its sensual-concrete realization (“artefacticity”) and subsequently by an experimental semiotic connection between verbal (literary) and visual (illustrative) component. Study attempts to survey its poetological, axiological, and aesthetical aspects, while the special attention is given on the issue of language evocation, synesthesia, verbal-visual complementarity, and the relations of visual perception, imagination and thinking. Addressing of the issue is based in the embodied cognition paradigm. Aesthetical-experiential and cognitive potential of experimental and traditional approaches towards the visual representation of (un)seeing is analyzed on concrete examples. Within the comparison occur differences that are related to situating, resp. intentional shift of a book recipient from the position of passive observer into the position of visual experience active creator. Aim of the study is to draft an interpretational frame for artistic embodiment of visuality topic, which reflects the blindness as the cultural construct.
