EMOTION REGULATION STRATEGIES AS PREDICTORS OF EXTERNALIZING AND INTERNALIZING PROBLEMS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Abstract
Objectives: In the present study some predicting factors of externalizing and internalizing problems were examined as childrenВ’s emotion regulation strategies. The main aim of the research was to investigate the relationship between emotion regulation strategies -as cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (EP)-, and behavioral problems in the case of youngsters. Methods: A Hungarian minority group of children from Transylvania were selected. The children (N = 227; male = 53.3%) completed the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for children and adolescents (ERQ-CA) to evaluate which emotion regulation strategy is more typical for each person. The parents completed the parent version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to measure externalizing and internalizing problems. ChildrenВ’s age ranged between 11-14 years (M = 12.69, SD = .68). Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and childrenВ’s externalizing and internalizing problems. Demographic data (gender, age, residence, siblings, exercising, -grade point average-GPA) were controlled in the data analysis. Results: Based on the results expressive suppression was a significant predictor of internalizing problems but none of the emotion regulation strategies showed significant prediction of the externalizing problems. The findings of this study suggest that in the case of internalizing problems, gender and expressive suppression were significant predictors, and in the case of externalizing problems exercising and GPA showed similar significance. Conclusions: Several previous studies showed that expressive suppression is associated with anxiety and depression. Similarly to this, based on the results of the present research, children with internalizing problems appear to use more expressive suppression strategies than children with externalizing problems. In future examination the role of other informant characteristics like parental emotion regulation, attachment, and the childВ’s behavioral problems (conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder), family characteristics (childВ’s role in the family, parental acceptance) should be investigated. It could be a main goal of future research to investigate the flexibility in strategy use
