Abstract

The research purpose is to propose a model for developing the sociocultural competence of profession-oriented text translators as part of translator professional competence. For this purpose, an analysis was made of the specifics of sociocultural competence of profession-oriented text translators in order to redefine the concept of “sociocultural competence of profession-oriented text translators” and consider the content of the proposed model for forming this competence. Based on the cognitive approach, the authors substantiate the necessity of using the “Ordnung” and “Erde” concepts to reflect the specifics of German geological texts and their conceptual features. From the perspective of the discursive approach, the object of translation work – German geological discourse – is identified, its sociocultural characteristics are defined which should be known to intended profession-oriented text translators so that they will be able to successfully work as mediators in cross-cultural communication. It is proposed that the profession-oriented text translator competence should be developed in a staged manner based on an integrative model of teaching profession-oriented translation using conventional active and interactive teaching methods and modes including case studies based on the subject knowledge of the major specialty. Having acquired this competence, profession-oriented text translators will be able to efficiently carry out cross-cultural communication in their professional sphere.
