EXCELLENCE-BASED PREDICTORS OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY
Abstract
Students’ critical thinking ability includes deductive and inductive thinking, the ability to pla experiments, precise assumption identification, all of which are essential cognitive abilities for prosperity in everyday life and for further career success. Previous studies concluded that students, who participated in extracurricular activities, such as competitions, have higher levels of critical thinking abilities than their non-attending peers. The im of this study is the investigation of the predictive power of participation in different types and levels of competitions for the variability of students’ critical thinking ability. 229 students from Babeș-Bolyai University participated in this research. Relevant demographic and competition-related characteristics of participants were recorded, and for the measurement of critical thinking ability the Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level Z was applied. In our correlational, cross-sectional study, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted. Controlling socio-demographic variables, the types of competitions explai 13.3% of the variance of critical thinking ability. Among types of competitions participation in humanities county and national Olympiad, respectively science subject national Olympiad are significant predictors of critical thinking ability. Participation in sport and art Olympiads and institution-level c mpetition attendance has a statistically insignificant unique contribution to the model. Our results highlight the role of participation in humanities and science subject competitions in students’ critical thinking ability, therefore the support and encouragement of teachers and parents for extracurricular activities is outstandingly important
