TEACHERSВ’ REFLECTION ON THE MODEL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN SCHOOL
Abstract
In the last decades, there has been a discussion about teachersВ’ professional development in Slovakia but also in the European context. Researches show that Slovak teachers have lost their professional status in Slovakia. Their initial and continuing education is strongly theoretical and formal, the development of their practical skills and team working is not supported. As a research team, we have created a Model of professional development of teachers in schools which reflects actual problems of teachersВ’ professionalization. The Model supports the professional development of teachers as individuals, teams and school as a whole. The Model also offers optimal strategies for the development. Supporting tools include diagnostics, planning, implementation and improvement reflection. The aim of this paper is to present the reflection on the proposed model, strategies and tools supporting professional development in schools, provided by representatives of all relevant types of schools (kindergarten, elementary and secondary schools). The research method used for the validation of the Model was focus groups consisting of teachers and school leaders. After the validation, the Model was used as an experiment in one school. The article has certain limitations connected to validation in one school, but it opens a discussion about effective and systematic teachersВ’ professional development in schools.
