COLORIMETRY AND EXPOSURE MEASUREMENT IN MODERN CINEMATOGRAPHY
Abstract
Colorimetry and exposure measurement rank among the key technological attributes for the qualitative acceptance of a media work in the context of using modern technologies. Abrupt changes and a rapid development in audiovisual recording represent a qualitative shift in the formal understanding of a media work. Our research focuses on the practical determination of exposure and of the colorimetric setting of modern digital cameras for low-budget films, exploiting the maximum digital recording potential of various recording devices. It is about creating the artistic form of an audiovisual work using the technologies of available devices and making the most of their possibilities. The main aim of our research is to set out practical guidelines for applying the dynamic range in the creative practice using typical measuring devices, for instance the luminance meter, light meter and colorimeter, as reference equipment for the practice with the primary focus on efficiency and precision in the work of a cameraman. The sustainability of the image form, whether in the form of luminance or colorimetry, is the basis for the psychosensory perception of the multimedia work by the audience. This text is merely a partial introductory material to our research into digital exposure measurement.
