PAGANISM AS DISCOURSE: THE CONCEPT OF В‘ALIENВ’ IN OLD RUSSIAN LITERATURE
Abstract
The article is devoted to the category ‘Slavic paganism’ which is very popular in modern culture. The author discovers two main meanings of the term – ‘paganism’ as a scientific and ideological construct which derives from 17th century and ‘pogani’ (heathens) as historiosophical concept in the literature of Old Russia. The last can determine any group of people connected with ‘alien’ environment mostly in religious and cultural sense. Also the concept had a strong socio-political context, that’s why ‘pogani’ could be used regarding not only to the members of so-called pre-Christian religion but to all enemies of Russian state and Church from within and without. There was a big challenge in 17th century with ‘Kievan Synopsis’. This historic compilation marked the beginning of the ‘paganism’ as a part of the ‘own’ history. The investigation is made on the basis of manuscripts from collections of The Russian State Museum, The Russian State Library and The National Library of Russia.
