OPINIONS OF SOUTHERN SLOVAKIA RESIDENTS ON IMMIGRANTS
Abstract
A migration is effect that executes us through the whole history of human race. Although the Slovak Republic belongs to countries with lowest numbers of immigrants the number has an ascendant trend at the present. That is the reason why we should direct our interest to this issue in Slovakia. The intention of this work task is to describe the situation to immigrants, and to find out the opinions of residents in western Slovakia about immigrants. We used the questionnaire for collecting data. The research samples were residents of western part of Slovakia aged 18 and above. The amount of the research sample was 403 respondents. We reviewed the data findings mainly by gender, age and economic aspects. We have found out that residents of western part of Slovakia are in major interested in the immigration issues. The significant differences were between the gender and the economic situation. The residents of western Slovakia are not willing to quit the stereotype opinion about immigrants that they can be the contribution to our society. Specific attention should be paid to informing the public about the benefits of migration, particularly from an economic point of view, as the lack of information on economic impacts is often the source of a negative perception of society about migration. With this approach, the Slovakia could help to eliminate elements of the negative perception of the host country, such as xenophobia, bias disorder, or stereotypical perception.
