THE EVALUATION OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN QUALITY
Abstract
Architectural heritage restoration assumes a key role to achieve urban sustainable development due to the advantages it ensures in terms of limited soil consumption, energy efficiency, increased urban quality and community well-being. In territories where welfare reaches satisfactory levels, the ratio between qualitative and quantitative needs tends to increase progressively; this phenomenon involves all production sectors, including that of architectural design which is urged to introduce appropriate quality objectives in its ideation processes. The assessment of the quality of an architectural design is justified by the advisability to check the results of its solutions with reference to the needs expressed by those who intend to use directly or indirectly the product, from the point of view of the community, general, impartial and binding. The goal of making the quality assessment of designs widespread, fair and compulsory would require the recourse to specific assessment models based on criteria and methods that are explicit, objective and specifically regulated. The assessment model would refer to a methodology based on requirements and aimed at verifying the correspondence of the architectural design to a set of performance and object prescriptions using multi-criteria schemes. In order to ensure the assessment objectivity, the categories, requirements and quality prescriptions to be complied with by architectural designs are directly determined by the different social categories interested in the modalities and contents of the realization and use of the architectural result.
