Abstract

Background Our research aimed to outline the muscular activity characteristics at athletes, with the help of sEMG parameters indexes, at the same time, trying to prove their relevance, in defining, from electrophysiological point of view, the corresponding studied sports. Methods We have studied a group formed of 22 male athletes, 11 fencers and 11 volleyball players, active for at least 6 years, exclusively in either one of the studied sports, with homogeneous average ages, heights, weights and training regime. EMG BIOPAC MP 150 device, connected to PC Pentium IV, was used to record muscular biopotentials, obtained, during, maximum isometric contractions, of both hands fingers flexors, sustained through fatigue, with a help of a dynamometer. Results Volleyball players presented, the highest values of total exhaustion threshold (TET) index, for frequency parameters, in comparison with the values of the same index, for time parameters, which were the lowest. Fencers recorded values of TET, totally opposed to volleyball players, regarding the two categories of mentioned parameters and for the third type of EMG parameters, suddenness ones, the results obtained by both sportsmen, were quite similar, with a little advantage for fencers. Conclusions The differences, remarked for the recorded values of EMG parameters, outline the muscular activity, characteristic to a certain sports and prove the relevance of these parameters.
