THE PATCHWORK BASED METHOD OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN. TWO CASE STUDIES FROM WROCLAW, POLAND
Abstract
Under increasing pressure for change in the land use patterns within city's floodplains, there is a need of protecting or reconnecting fragmented ecological corridors along the riversides. Combining leisure and recreational activities with urban agriculture and flood protection, seems to be the most sensible thing to do in order to ensure efficient use of ecosystem services. In practice, this often leads to formation of mosaic landscape pattern, where a patchwork-like parcels have an integrating function. The article presents two park projects, which have been proposed at an interval of 14 years. Both are situated along the same river in Wroclaw. The Millennium park designed in 2000 as a holistic concept is still facing delays in land purchases; the second one, based on the patch-working system was proposed as a ”ready to use” result of public participation process. The author analyses the advantages and disadvantages of both concepts.
