SET-BACK IRREGULARITY IN EXISTING STRUCTURES
Abstract
Irregular structures in areas with high seismic activity are always at risk of earthquakes. These type of structures should not have irregularities in any type to avoid heavy damage from earthquakes. Otherwise, the structures will be severe damaged from earthquakes. This damage, results in loss of innocent civilians and damage to the valuable property. Because of this, the limit values of many irregularities in the structures are controlled by codes. One of the irregularities in the buildings is set-back irregularity. Set-back irregularity is defined as a vertical irregularity that occurs as a result of sudden change of structural width. In this study, the effects of set-back irregularity in structures that are under seismic excitation, are examined with numerical examples. Measures to be taken by comparing the results obtained from numerical findings are given for both newly designed structures and existing structures.
