DOBRUDJA-CAUSE OF DIVISION IN THE CENTRAL POWERS CAMP

Abstract

After the military collapse of Romania, in the Autumn of 1916, the entire country - except a small part of Moldavia, with Ia?i as main city - fell under Central Powers occupation. Dobrudja was invaded by German and Bulgarian troops and divided. Bulgaria take Southern Dobrudja (lost as a consequence of the second Balkan war, from 1913) and the administration of the rest of the province, for a short time, followed by an effective German administration. In the Summer of 1918, after the Treaties of Buftea and Bucharest, which stated that Dobrudja was ruled by a German-Bulgarian-Ottoman condominium, some tensions between Central Powers Allies stirred up. Bulgaria wanted to have all the region and the Ottoman Empire demand for compensations if Bulgarian was to be satisfied. The whole problem was directed to the leader of the alliance, Germany. Our paper try to reflect this "confrontation", as it was highlighted by the Bulgarian, German and even United States journals: to all these we add the official German and Bulgarian political statements. We cannot exclude the idea that the press debate, and the ideas launched, have the goal to exert some pressure upon Central Powers allies, which, ultimately, to lead to the dissolution of this alliance but this hypothesis cannot be confirmed in the present state of research.
