Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of student’s cultural self-determination by means of humanitarianly oriented teaching a foreign language. A person’s cultural self-determination is the formation of the student as a subject and an object of the public relations, the establishment of the stable relations with the world around us caused by the valuable and semantic contents. The development of the students’ cultural self-determination in the course of humanitarianly oriented teaching a foreign language represents a difficult, complex, system process which essence is shown through the humanitarian contents, the purposes and tasks, the methods of learning a foreign language and foreign-language literature in the classroom and out-of-class time creating the real conditions for the enrichment of intellectual, emotional, strong-willed and moral potential of the personality, for the stimulation of one’s aspiration to implement oneself, to expand the borders of self-development. Proceeding from it, the authors of the article make the assumption of the efficiency of the humanitarian approach to teaching a foreign language for the purpose of the development of the student’s cultural self-determination and prove it experimentally. The experimental work consisted of three stages: the stating experiment (which included a conversation with teachers of a foreign language in the University, the diagnostics of an initial condition of students’ cultural self-determination), the creating experiment (realizing the experimental program which included practical classes of a foreign language, home reading, classes in a special course «Humanistic tendencies of the English and American literature», out-of-class activities where there was a gradual mastering of the social values enriching inner world and promoting the development of student’s cultural self-determination, the check experiment (aiming to determine the results of the carried-out work). The data of the check experiment confirmed the availability of the essential positive distinctions between the experimental and control groups on the cognitive, attitude, semantic criteria.
