WRITING AN ESSAY IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE: HOW TO MAKE IT EFFECTIVE
Abstract
The purpose of the research is to work out ways in which writing an essay in a foreign language could be made easier for students, for today teaching it is widely considered to be one of the most difficult tasks in the field of language acquisition and education. The study was performed on the basis of essays written by University students in their 1st academic year, whose level of English (as a second language) is between B1+ - B2. The main findings of the research are a set of recommendations that the author called ''Five Ss of Effective Essays'', which are aimed at better students' understanding of how to write an essay in a foreign language and better teachers' understanding of how to teach it. These recommendations stem from the author's study of real-life students' essays and summarize the existing scientific findings on the issue of teaching essay writing The findings can be used in further theoretical reserach on the topic, since they propose a simple approach to an elaborate field of language acquisition and education. Also they can be practically used in teaching a second language at high school faculties and departments where writing an essay is an essential part of the studying process.
