GENERALIZED INTERNET USAGE BY ADOLESCENTS AS A SELF-ADAPTATION TO THE MEDIASCAPE
Abstract
The focus of this article is on adolescents’ internet usage. Researchers’ attention is usually attracted either by internet risks and harms to adolescents, or by the use of internet as a new education technology, or tool. At the same time methodology is deemed by the author as insufficient and the approaches to the internet – which should be viewed as an environmental equivalent – are inadequate. Self-adaptation of adolescents (10–11 years old) to internet usage is discussed. The author’s data (from a survey of 809 students from big and small Russian provincial cities) collected in 2013 is compared to the considerable data from the pan-European survey вЂAdolescents Online’ (2011). This comparison raises some methodologically important questions such as: how to avoid a biased (alarmist) approach in this field? Can one use simultaneously sociological methods and philosophical views? Can one find objective trends in the usage of internet by adolescents? The analysis confirmed that gender, place of living (big or small city) were not significant factors in adolescents’ internet activity. The boundary between media-behavior of adolescents with parental control and without is not clear cut.
