TRAVELS THROUGH THE WESTERN ALPS IN THE AGE OF GRAND TOUR: ALBANIS BEAUMONT FROM CUNEO TO NICE
Abstract
Engineer and painter François Albanis Beaumont (1753-1811) travels on the most famous routes of the Grand Tour. Albanis Beaumont writes and draws. His approach to the region was different. In fact, the great Italian cities, their buildings and famous antiquities, seem relegated to second place, nevertheless he is a critical observer. The descriptions of the trips of Albanis Beaumont across the Alps are rich of topographical, economic, geological, anthropological and historical information. The traveller, however, does not forget to write about the material journey with the difficulties present to overcome the Maritime Alps. Among his very interesting trips is the one between Cuneo and Nice. The chosen route is the Route Royal which joins the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Turin, to its port: Nice. The most interesting point of the trip is the Col de Tende. The Col de Tende, now in France, one of the three grand passages over the Alps to Italy, is the highest peak of the Maritime Alps, and the only part of that chain including the Brouvis and the Braus which is passable.
