Abstract

Balkan architecture, as a synthesis between Orient and Occident, has offered modern architecture many possibilities for continuity and particularization. These features, interpreted and exploited by Henriette Delavrancea-Gibory, Romanian architect from the modern period, can be found within the architectural works on the shore of the Black Sea. The villas from Balchik, integrated to a specific landscape and in harmony with the spirit of the place, continue and reinterpret the local traditions of the vernacular architecture. The villas designed by this architect, have marked the image of the resort by interpreting a Balkan replica of the Mediterranean space. She draws up more than 25 projects for Balchik, imprinting her own vision on the town. Architecture will mark the resort in this way. The author of the Balchik Villas interprets in a modern way the context of architecture, performing a cultural transfer. She relies on a timeless substratum: that of modernism and the vernacular. The traditional values, passed through the filter of modern architecture, may constitute an architecture lesson for contemporary, all the more so as modern architecture has produced, in general, discontinuities in using the tradition.
